Embodying Teshuva

Outline
I. Warm Up
Welcome people and invite them to take off shoes and warm up individually as they enter.

II. Introduction
1) Get people in a circle standing: 1) share names and do a movement with name (and everyone repeats name and movement); if time 2) go around circle where everyone does movement and name together, and then 3) go around circle with just movement.
2) (Still stand) What is teshuva, “return” or “repentence” to you? (brief discussion)
3) Introduce movement: teshuvah--not only returning to ourselves but returning to the people around us--that process is not isolated--it’s in context--relational.
we’re gonna explore this process first individually-being attuned to our own experience of return--returning to our own bodies first.  and then to widen the circle and explore what it means to return in relationship to that which is around us. and we’ll do that part in paried movement.

III. Individual Movement
In our individual movement: How does it feel to return to our bodies?  What are the barriers to returning to our bodies as we move?  What habits do we carry with us that we can let go of as we reconnect with our most natural movement and breath?  What types of awareness and sensations are we “returning to” in our bodies that we’ve wandered away from (awareness of breath, pleasure of feeling feet on the ground)?
1) Spread out and do a guided body scan (say hello to feet): the image of a landing strip and talking about "how many bulbs are lit up around body"?
2) In returning to an awareness of your body, notice if there are parts of you that want to move (foot wants to...)?
3) Invite to explore the space (can ask some the space)?
...Find someone near to you...(or maybe someone with similar height)

IV. Paired Movement
Can we find stability in our movement?  What does it feel like to “return” to our movement partner when our physical relationship is constantly changing?  When in our paired movement do we feel like we’ve “made it back” or “returned”?  How do we sense this?  What are our clues?
1) Point of tension and contact in order to stand up.  Stabilize with backs (back to back with partner, pushing low backs together, maybe working on standing by pushing, flattening lower back).  Maybe walk around back to back?  Rise and sink?  (3 minutes)
2) Come back to floor, and will begin to explore “going out” into space and then “returning” in increasing intervals, always coming back to “back-to-back” position with partner
3) Call out when people should go, and when they should come back (1:1, 3:3, 7:7?)
4) Close with back to back → deep breath together → coming to standing (back to back) → come into circle

V. Reflection
-How did it feel to do individual warm up (anything surprise you or challenge you?)
-How did it feel to work with another person (anything surprise you or challenge you?)
-What was it like to return to your own body?
-What does “returning” feel like when our bodies/we are always changing?
-Who and what do we return to - what is the constant that we return to?
-Did any of this connect with your understanding of teshuva?
-Did any of this expand or challenge your understanding of teshuva?
-How might we bring some of this awareness into our daily lives?

VI. Closing
-Thank people for trying this experiment with us!
-Hope you can draw on this experience as you enter the High Holidays.
-”Hands” closing
